Teaching from text books
I am teaching an applied ethics course and am required to use a textbook. I don't believe I have ever even read a philosophy text book, but the course is meant for adult learners getting a degree in business and so reading Aristotle and Kant might not seem very relevant to them. This is certainly not how I would set up an Ethics class and I'm realizing why that is more and more.
The text is fairly easy and straightforward, so I'm not sure what my function is. Usually, I am very text oriented and I like to try and draw some of my favorite and most important quotes out of the text to let my students contemplate them. Well, its a textbook and as such it lacks those. Furthermore, I tried preparing notes to go over the material but all I was really doing was restating what the textbook said, there isn't much substance to it and it leaves little room for ambiguity. It is further complicated by the fact that the online component has quizzes they have to take and so i feel I would be cheating them if I didn't stick to what's in the book.
So, what is my function in this class? Do I just restate what the textbook says and answer any questions they have? If so, how do I keep students from completely slacking off in my classroom and getting bored with being told what they already read as has been happening.
